 Frequently Asked Questions

What if my child is on medication?
Many autistic children benefit from medications used for symptomatic treatment. If a child is being treated with medication by his/her physician the staff at the McCarton School will support this in every way. Dr. McCarton can supervise medication treatment or can work closely with whoever the family has chosen to oversee the medication regimen.

Will transportation and food be provided?
Transportation and food are not provided. Snacks and lunch are brought from home because many of the children have individual dietary plans.

Will my child have nap time?
Schedules will be arranged individually, allowing for nap times during the day for young children if it is found to be necessary.

How will classes be assigned?
Classes are not arranged according to chronological age, although children in each class are typically within a two year range. Children are grouped by developmental and functional skill level, based upon standardized tests, home and clinical observations and baseline evaluation by the educational director and associate director.

Will parents be able to observe their children?
Classrooms are adjacent to observation rooms that allow parents to observe their children through one-way mirrors without disrupting the educational process. We encourage parent visits and observations.

Will parent/caregiver training be provided?
Parent and caregiver training are provided weekly. Self-help, play and community functioning are targeted, along with specific areas of concern.
